CASEM Has 5 Annual Awards

The awards were created to recognize CASEM physicians who have contributed to the sports medicine world in a significant way, whether it be through community work or through teaching and mentoring the next generation of sport medicine physicians.

Award nominations deadline is October 13th, 2023.

1. The Community Sport Medicine Physician of the Year Award

The Community Sport Medicine Physician of the Year Award was developed by CASEM in 2006 to recognize the members with outstanding sport medicine volunteer commitment in the community.

2. Educator/Mentor Award

This annual award recognizes a physician who has demonstrated longstanding and outstanding contributions in teaching, mentoring and leadership in the field of Sport and Exercise Medicine in Canada. Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians nominated for this award will be experienced in teaching sport medicine learners in a variety of settings. The nominee may have been a valued mentor for Sport and Exercise Medicine students, residents, fellows or other SEM learners. They may have shown leadership in teaching, clinical practice, sports coverage, volunteerism and advocacy.

3. The Medal of Service Award

This annual award recognizes individuals who have made an exceptional and outstanding contribution to the advancement of sport and exercise medicine in Canada. The award is granted in recognition of:

  • Service to their profession in the field of event planning, event and/or team coverage
  • Service to Canadians by helping to raise the standards of sport and exercise medicine in Canada
  • Personal contribution to the advancement of the art and science of sport and exercise medicine.

4. Honorary Members

An “Honorary Member” is an individual who is granted membership in the Academy as an Honorary Member. In order to be eligible as an Honorary Member, the individual must have demonstrated a unique involvement or achievement in the area of sport or sport medicine or with the Academy or whose reputation, achievements or contributions have brought honour and prestige to the Academy.

Honorary Members:

  • Must be approved by the unanimous vote of the Board of Directors.
  • Are entitled to all the benefits to which Regular Members are entitled.
  • Are not required to pay membership fees.
  • Are entitled to receive notice of, to attend and participate in and to vote (one vote each) at, all Annual Meetings and Special Meetings of the Academy.
  • Are not eligible for election as a Director or to hold any other office in the Academy.

The Board of Directors will generally not grant more than one honorary membership in any fiscal year of the Academy.

5. Lifetime Members

A “Life Member” is an individual who is granted membership in the Academy as a Life Member. In order to be eligible as a Life Member, the individual must have been a Regular Member in good standing for at least 20 years and must have performed outstanding service to the Academy or to sport medicine generally. Life Members must be approved by the unanimous vote of the Board of Directors. Life Members are entitled to all the benefits to which Regular Members are entitled but are not required paying membership fees. The Board of Directors will generally not grant more than one life membership in any fiscal year of the Academy. Life Members are entitled to receive notice of, to attend and participate in and to vote (one vote each) at, all Annual Meetings and Special Meetings of the Academy. Life Members are eligible to serve as Directors and hold any office in the Academy.
