CCES Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee (TUEC) Member

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) is seeking individuals to fill the volunteer opportunity of Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee (TUEC) Member on an ongoing volunteer basis.

The TUEC has a key role in implementing the Canadian Anti-Doping Program (CADP) by reviewing and evaluating athletes’ applications for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE), which allow an athlete with a medical condition to use substances or methods that are otherwise prohibited in sport through their inclusion on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Prohibited List. The TUEC follows WADA’s International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (ISTUE) to determine if a TUE should be granted.

The CCES works collaboratively to ensure Canadians have a positive sport experience. Through its programs, the CCES manages unethical issues in sport, protects the integrity of Canadian sport, and promotes True Sport to activate values-based sport on and off the field of play. The CCES is an independent, national, not-for profit organization that is responsible for the administration of the CADP.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee Member

Ideal candidates must possess a medical degree (M.D. or equivalent) and have experience in sport medicine settings. They should possess strong communication skills, be detail oriented, demonstrate diligence in following technical procedures, and maintain professionalism to ensure the CCES’s goals are achieved.

POSITION DETAILS

Key Responsibilities

  • Review Applications: Evaluate and make determinations on TUE applications from athletes, ensuring adherence to the ISTUE and its guidelines, as appropriate.
  • Decision Making: Use professional judgement to provide unbiased opinions and make impartial decisions in the best interest of athletes, sport, and the organization.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with fellow TUEC members and liaise effectively with other stakeholders.
  • Adherence: Uphold CCES values, principles, and policies while maintaining confidentiality and following technical procedures as per the ISTUE.

TUEC MEMBER PROFILE

Required Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree: M.D. or equivalent qualification.
  • Professional Experience: Demonstrated experience in sport medicine or related fields.
  • Expertise: Specialists in psychiatry (ADHD/ADD), pain management, cardiology, or general sports medicine.
  • Integrity: Impeccable ethical standards and confidentiality.

Desired Skills:

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required; French language skills are an asset.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyze complex cases and apply logical reasoning.
  • Detail Oriented: Ability to follow protocols and procedures with precision.
  • Confidentiality: Proven track record of managing sensitive information with discretion.

POSITION DETAILS

  • Commitment: Review two to three TUE applications per month, with flexibility depending on application volume and specialty.
  • Meetings: Attend biannual TUEC meetings, which may be virtual or in person.
  • Location: Remote work.
  • Remuneration: The CCES TUEC is composed of volunteers; no remuneration is provided.
