The 2024 Research grant applications is open. The deadline for applications is August 31st, 2024.
Two grants are available this year, the $15,000 CASEM Research Grant and the $15,000 New Investigator Grant.
NOTE
- The principal investigator must be a CASEM member in good standing at the time of submission (for a minimum of 1 year prior to application) and be an integral part of the development and administration of the research project.
- The application has to be submitted by a CASEM member or the application will be rejected.
One $15,000 CASEM Research Grant

All CASEM members are eligible to submit a proposal for this grant. To be eligible to apply for this grant, investigators must meet the following criteria:
- No existing or matching funds are required.
- Topic of the research must have direct relevance to Sport Medicine.
- The principal investigator must be a CASEM member in good standing at the time of submission (for a minimum of 1 year prior to application) and be an integral part of the development and administration of the research project.
- The application has to be submitted by a CASEM member or the application will be rejected.
Funding is subject to the following conditions:
- You must start using the funding within 6 months of award date or the grant must be returned to CASEM. Funding must be used within 12 months of award date or must be returned to CASEM
- Remaining funds at the end of the study should be returned to CASEM.
- The CASEM Research Grant only supports the direct costs of research. No funding should be used for indirect costs of research (e.g., library, heat and lighting, office furniture, overhead, administrative charges or fees).
- Only up to $750 of your grant may be used for travel purposes.
- Any presentation or publication of the project should acknowledge the CASEM Research Fund.
- A final report of the study results should be sent to the CASEM Research Committee.
- The study should be presented at an Annual CASEM Symposium.
- The study should be submitted for consideration for publication in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine (if project is within the scope of the Journal).
One $15,000 CASEM New Investigator Grant
Please note the research grant application deadline is August 31st 2024.
In order to assist new investigators in developing their research in Sport Medicine, one $15,000 award will be restricted to “new” researchers. No existing or matching funds are required and there is no restriction of the topic of the research other than that it must have direct relevance to Sport Medicine. To be eligible to apply for this grant, investigators must meet the following criteria:
- No existing or matching funds are required.
- Topic of the research must have direct relevance to Sport Medicine.
- The principal investigator must be a CASEM member in good standing at the time of submission (for a minimum of 1 year prior to application) and be an integral part of the development and administration of the research project.
- The application has to be submitted by a CASEM member or the application will be rejected.
- Have 5 or less years of independent research experience and/or funding. For example, MDs who have recently completed their residency, fellowship, or graduate degree or MDs who have been in practice for some time, but would like to start a research focus. Applicants cannot be currently in training as a medical school student, resident or fellow. Funding received as a graduate student or during post-graduate medical training while under the supervision of a senior investigator are not considered to be independent research experience.
- Not have received more than 2 research grants in the past 5 years (as a principal investigator or co-investigator).

One $20,000 CASEM Multicenter Research Grant
This grant is not available for the 2024 year.
In order to promote multi-centre collaborative research, one $20,000 grant will awarded. To be eligible to apply for this grant, investigators must meet the following criteria:
- No existing or matching funds are required.
- Topic of the research must have direct relevance to Sport Medicine.
- The principle investigator must be a CASEM member in good standing (for a minimum of 1 year prior to application) and be an integral part of the development and administration of the research project.
- The application has to be submitted by a CASEM member or the application will be rejected.
- The project must involve at least 5 clinics, of which at least 3 must be community/non-academic institution-based clinics.
Funding is subject to the following conditions:
- You must start using the funding within 6 months of award date or the grant must be returned to CASEM. Funding must be used within 12 months of award date or must be returned to CASEM
- Remaining funds at the end of the study should be returned to CASEM.
- The CASEM Research Grant only supports the direct costs of research. No funding should be used for indirect costs of research (e.g., library, heat and lighting, office furniture, overhead, administrative charges or fees).
- Only up to $750 of your grant may be used for travel purposes.
- Any presentation or publication of the project should acknowledge the CASEM Research Fund.
- A final report of the study results should be sent to the CASEM Research Committee.
- The study should be presented at an Annual CASEM Symposium.
- The study should be submitted for consideration for publication in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine (if project is within the scope of the Journal).
Funding Criteria and Conditions
- Proposals must be submitted by a CASEM member in good standing (any category of membership). The CASEM member must be an integral part of the development and administration of the research project
- If the project involves human subjects or animals, a letter indicating ethics approval from the appropriate authority of the research institution must accompany the proposal. Application for ethical approval can also be submitted concurrently with the CASEM Grant application, but a letter indicating ethics approval must be provided prior to release of grant funds. If the research is to be performed in a laboratory, a letter of support from the laboratory must accompany the proposal.
- The proposal should be submitted in the following format:
- Cover page with investigator name(s), institution name, contact information of principal investigator and indicate if applying for CASEM Research Grant, CASEM Multicenter Research Grant or the CASEM New Investigator Grant. If applying for the CASEM New Investigator Grant, describe in one short paragraph how you meet the eligibility criteria to be considered for this grant.
- Maximum proposal length: 3000 words (excluding cover page, proposal headings, figures, tables, appendices, and references)

- Objective
- Project Methodology (subjects, procedures, outcome measures, analysis, etc.)
- Relevance of the study to the field of Sport Medicine
- Proposed budget
- If the proposal is already funded from another source, the budget should clearly distinguish between the total budget for the project and the part constituting the request from the CASEM Research Fund.
- Funding for travel to present the results of the study is limited to $750.
