First of It’s Kind Symposium to be Held in Ottawa Highlighting Benefits of Physical Activity Across a Spectrum of Chronic Diseases
Medicine Through Movement Conference to provide evidence-based rationale for the use of activity and movement as medicine on April 6 at the Delta Ottawa
(OTTAWA, ON – April 5, 2019) On World Physical Activity Day, the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM) is presenting the inaugural Medicine Through Movement (MTM) Conference in Ottawa. MTM will profile through an evidence-based lens the role that physical activity could play in the prevention, treatment and management of several chronic diseases.
Former Olympian and MTM Conference faculty member Jane Thornton says “We’re excited to highlight the role that we, as physicians, can play in addressing the importance of movement. We hope to not only provide the rationale behind the use of movement as medicine but also provide practical guidance on how to implement and monitor exercise modalities in clinical practice.”
The conference is aimed at the physician, regardless of specialty, who works with patients with chronic diseases. Health care professionals including Physiotherapists, Sport Chiropractors, Sport Massage Therapists, Occupational Therapists, nurses, psychologists and social workers should find the topics covered in the conference complement their specialties well.
For this first conference CASEM is looking at some relatively new areas of research in prescribing activity in oncology, dementia, and mental health, as well as the growing evidence of physical activity benefits in pediatric obesity, osteoarthritis and cardiac rehab.
Dr. Elisabeth Hobden incoming president of CASEM and MTM faculty member says “We’ve known for some time about the benefits of exercise on overall health so we’re really excited about opening the dialogue about how physicians can use movement as a prescription for patients with chronic diseases.”
